In 2006-2007, a pilot study was conducted in 5 government schools in Akwa Ibom State, with astounding results. Since then, Jolly Phonics has been rolled out by our implementing partner, Universal Learning Solutions, to tens of thousands of schools across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
All of these projects initially benefitted from the Jolly Futures donations stated here, but the Nigerian government, particularly the Universal Basic Education Commission, has taken ownership of the project, which has sustained it and also enabled the spread of Jolly Phonics to over 120,000 teachers and 10 million pupils in the country to date.
Government, World Bank and other donor funding have also ensured that a holistic project model has been implemented, including regular classroom observations, teacher cluster meetings, additional materials, trainings for officials, pre-service teacher training and more. As a result, Jolly Futures in Nigeria is consistently improving English literacy levels.
Jolly Futures has now spread to all 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria.
