Jolly Phonics trainers felt that the low literacy levels in many Ugandan schools could be improved through the use of the Jolly Phonics program. In 2017, the first Jolly Phonics pilot was successfully conducted in 6 schools in Masaka Municipality. The impact of this pilot for improving pupils' literacy levels and English language skills was notably appreciated by teachers and local education officers. It was recognised as an effective way of helping learners to achieve reading and writing independence at a very early stage. Due to these amazing results, over the course of just a year, many other pilots were accepted in different areas of the country.
Makindye Division is one of the five administrative divisions of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. English is medium of instruction in schools and other educational institutions within Kampala. From 17 Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Kindergarten and Junior schools, 6 schools were selected by Mrs Florence Kyoshabire chairperson for KCCA schools Makindye, and Ms. Rehema - the Curriculum Coordinator for KCCA Makindye on May 2018. Pilot trainings were carried out in June 2018. Parents of the selected pilot classes were also given workshop and guide to have a complete understanding of the project. The case study (baseline and end line) defined remarkable results. On April 2019, Jolly Futures was adopted across Makindye Divsion. More teachers were trained in March 2019. With that significant impact continued to show children’s phonological awareness, reading and writing skills both simple words and tricky words (irregular words) moreover, their reading for pleasure excelled. Isingiro is a district in the Western Region of Uganda. Seeing the outstanding achievement in Makindye there came a request for Jolly Futures pilot in Isingiro town. District Education Officer Nkuba Godfrey and Education officer Mrs Natukunda Agatha selected 6 pilot schools. The pilot achievement was outstanding.
As a result Jolly Phonics is now part of timetable and in the verge of National Adoption.
Pilot projects were completed in Mbale Municipality, Mukone Municipality, Luwero District and Western – Isingiro District. Rollouts were successful in Masaka Municipality, Bukomansimbi District, Jinja Municipality and Nakawa Division (Kampala). Central – Makindye Division pilot followed by rollout,
