An initial Jolly Phonics pilot project was conducted inn February 2019 in six schools in Leh district. Policy Changes with Union Territory Status caused changes in education policies after Ladakh became a Union Territory. This caused some delays on project further support and next steps. In November 2022, the District Institute of Education and Training expressed eagerness to restart the Jolly Phonics pilot in Leh district.
The pilot schools were selected from the villages of Aranoo, Sumoor, Tsaga, Laga, Fotoksar, and Koyuol in Leh district. In November 2022, 15 teachers from the selected experiemental schools received three-day training in Jolly Phonics. In September 2023 the teachers were also given a refresher training. School visits were conducted to assess the implementation in pilot schools. As Leh is in a remote area the teachers were also supported with frequent online sessions. Recorded videos were exchanged between pilot teachers and the trainer to support and motivate teachers in implementing Jolly Phonics.
Ladakh is described as a sparsely populated arid desert region in north-western India. The tough terrain, high altitude, and extreme winter temperatures from October to May make many villages inaccessible for most of the year. There are plans to roll out the Jolly Phonics programme in Leh district in February/March 2024. The following year, the programme is expected to be extended to Kargil district. The teachers' training will take place in the months of November and February during school closures for professional development.
