The project was initiated by Mr Rohan Agawane, the Additional District Collector, after attending a presentation on Jolly Phonics given by Ms Neeti Nagarkar. Training was approved for Geyzing and Soreng Districts and this took place in November 2021. 412 standard 1 teachers were trained by a team of 4 trainers. The programme was implemented in schools shortly after with children showing a great interest in learning through Jolly Phonics. Teachers equally appreciated the resources provided by Jolly Learning and report that using the Jolly Phonics lessons app is very useful. As success stories began to be shared across social media, the District Collector for Namchi District requested training for 409 teachers, which was conducted in May 2022.
In all 3 districts, students showed significant improvement in reading, spelling and pronunciation. These results prompted a meeting of high-level officials including the Additional Chief Secretary of Sikkim State, Mr Telang, the Joint Director of SCERT Ms Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Ms. Nagarkar and the Managing Director of Jolly Learning Mr Chris Jolly.
The meeting resulted in approval for state-wide rollout of Jolly Phonics, which commenced in March 2023 and saw an additional 319 teachers trained. Follow up mentoring and support was provided by government officials from Samagra Shiksha. Across all the districts, students continue to show remarkable improvement in their reading and writing. In order to ensure sustainability of the project, the government approved the reprint of Pupils Book 1 and 2 for subsequent cohorts of students in Sikkim State.
