Nilgiri is the first district where the pilot study in government schools was conducted in the year 2014. Pilot studies in Tamil Nadu were conducted in Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Krishnagir, Kanyakumari and Cuddalore blocks, The children in pilot study scored well. The programme was recommended to the state for roll-out in the district. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Mr. Elambahavath, IAS, the State Project Director and Jolly Learning to agree the project terms for rolling out Jolly Phonics in Tamil Nadu. The first phase of the state rollout was in 2015.
The second roll-out was in the academic year 2018-19 in Krishnagiri, Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram, Kanyakumari and Erode. Before the Covis -19 pandemic a further rollout in the following districts took place in Tiruvannamalai, Salem, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur.
Due to the size of the state Jolly Learning provided the printing license for the State to print the Teacher and Pupil books for each rollout. The State managed the printing and distribution of materials and organised the training for over 22,000 teachers from 25 districts. These teachers have been trained by a team of 44 trainers.
Teachers implementing Jolly Phonics have demonstrated creativity developing teaching aids and activities. The programme has significantly enhanced pupils' reading and writing skills in English, as well as benefiting children with special education needs. Positive feedback has led to requests for refresher training for teachers across the districts.
Jolly Phonics has been rolled out to all districts in Tamil Nadu
